Welcome to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, two sections totaling 26+ paved miles through stunning rural Dutchess and Columbia County landscapes. Since the mid-1980’s, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association has dreamed of a 46-mile rail trail in the Harlem Valley and Taconic Hills of eastern New York. The first segment of the trail opened in 1996. The Harlem Valley Rail Trail extends North from the hamlet of Wassaic to Copake Falls and is growing year by year.

The Irondale schoolhouse dating back to the late 1850s was one of 14 original one room schools serving the town of North East. With its original purpose over, it seemed destined for eventual demolition until 2008 when a small group of local residents incorporated as the Friends of the Irondale Schoolhouse to Ssve the building from further deterioration, restore the building as nearly as possible to its former self, relocate the structure to the village center making it more accessible, and repurpose the building to function as a public information and visitor center.
